Presented by: David Pugh, Esq., LCSW,  & Andrea Carlin, Esq., MSW 

Course Description: Presenters, who work as a MH Hearing Officer for the S.D. Superior Court & as the JFS Patient Advocate Supervisor, respectfully,   will address 5150 issues facing the clinician in a community setting and how there are changes in the 5150 process that are currently being considered.  They will then discuss the criteria for the 14-day hold and how the criteria is considered in the hospital to determine whether a patient would be found to meet the legal criteria in a certification hearing.  Finally, David will discuss the involuntary treatment of patients in an in-patient setting through the Riese Hearing.  

Objectives:  

  1. Review issues related to involuntary detention of patient in community setting through use of Welfare and Institutions Code Section 5150
  2. Discuss evaluation of criteria to detain patient for additional period not to exceed 14 days following 72-hour hold.  
  3. Review and discuss Riese Hearing relating to authority to provide involuntary treatment during in-patient stay.  
This presentation meets 1/4 of the biennial requirement for L&E training.

The San Diego Chapter of CSCSW holds its meetings on the first Thursday of the month from September through June  from 5:30 to 7:30 at the Jewish Family Service building, 8788 Balboa Avenue in Kearny Mesa. Meetings begin with a half hour of mingling, networking, and community building, followed by our program. CEU programs meet the requirements for 1.5 hours of continuing education credit for MFTs, LPCCs, and LCSWs as specified by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences; CEUs are FREE to our members, $15 for non-members.
