Presents

Valerie Piacitelli, LCSW

            "Eating Disorders: The Puberty Principle"

Overview:

This presentation is designed to help clinicians understand the predisposing factors in pre-teen and adolescents that lead to eating disorders. It is also designed to help parents and clinicians understand how to navigate this highly impactful transitional stage of development in an effort to increase self-esteem and decrease eating disordered behaviors by creating acceptance and sense of belonging. The focus is on prevention and knowledge being power before an eating disorder fully develops.

Goals and Objectives: As a result of this presentation, participants will be able to

1)Understand the emotional, physical and societal transitions that take place in pre and early adolescence & assist pre and early adolescents in gaining knowledge of upcoming changes and prepare them for such changes

2)Establish with pre and early teens ways to confront media messages by building self-esteem and not succumbing to negative body image influences

3)Support pre and early adolescents with a sense of belonging and acceptance to avoid potential pitfalls toward eating disorders & recognize early signs of eating disorders and treatment options
