Motivational Interviewing is a communication style which focuses on exploring and resolving ambivalence and centers on motivational processes within the individual that facilitate change. The method is collaborative and person-centered, supporting change in a manner congruent with the person's own values and concerns. This presentation will focus on understanding of the fundamental principles and spirit of Motivational Interviewing. In addition participants will learn the basic tenants of Motivational Interviewing to help elicit “change talk” primarily when an individual is ambivalent about change.
Karen Brockopp, MSW, LCSW is a trainer and licensed clinical social worker specializing in behavior change. She provides training and coaching to professional practitioners, psycho-social rehabilitation staff and social work students in arenas such as mental health, substance abuse, child welfare and academic institutions. Her professional career includes 25 years of experience with individuals who have a chronic mental illness and substance abuse history. Utilizing a communication approach which motivates personal changes, Ms. Brockopp creates an atmosphere of hope and action.
All meetings are from 9:30am to 12pm with networking before and after presentations. Bring business cards, flyers etc. Members earn 2 CE units at no cost. CE credit for non-members is $20.00, no charge to attend without credit. MSW students are encouraged to attend.
