Description:

Knowing L.A.'s history of social justice movements led by BIPOC & LGBTQ Angelinos gives practitioners contextualized competencies. By acknowledging L.A.’s Eurocentric, racist & colonialist social work history, clinicians understand the origins of suspicion held by members of the communities we serve. Clinical Social Workers must understand our complicated history in order to practice competently. Each of us should possess a working knowledge of the history of local social justice movements led by those who didn’t possess an MSW as well as the work conducted by marginalized MSWs.

Be inspired to learn about your community’s local social welfare history and honor the social justice movements and local leaders in your own town.
Commit to including the history of your local social welfare, local social justice movements and local social injustices in clinical supervision and on-boarding of new employees so that they understand the interlocking histories of oppression and empowerment within your local community.
Consider joining the California Social Welfare Archives to ensure that the social welfare leaders from your community are honored and included in your local MSW program’s education curriculum, your local social service providers and the state as a whole.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Elise Johnson is an LCSW, LPS who has been a social worker in her hometown of Los Angeles for 30 years. She is a clinical social worker in the Emergency Department at Long Beach Medical Center/Miller Children’s Hospital where she provides crisis mental health care, trauma support interventions, and a myriad of other psychosocial interventions. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic she has been grateful to be of service to COVID-19+ patients, families and fellow front line responders. She was a contributing advisor on the 2017 NASW Standards for Technology in Social Work Practice. She is currently a co-lead author in a national study that is studying front line emergency department and ICU clinical social workers who serve COVID-19+ patients and their families. Ms. Johnson teaches at both UCLA and CSUDH’s MSW programs. She teaches a combination of foundational theory courses as well as advanced clinical social work courses. In her lectures, she aims to highlight BIPOC and other under represented social workers whose contributions to our profession may have been overlooked or forgotten.

This is a District Meeting coordinated by the Greater Los Angeles District

This DISTRICT MEETING meets the qualifications for 1.5 hours of continuing education credit for MFTs, LPCCs, LEPs and/or LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.

Note: With supervisor approval, registered ASWs may use CEs toward LCSW hours.
