This presentation is tailored for professionals and community members who are interested in gaining insights into San Diego START's efforts to provide support for individuals and systems navigating both Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD), including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and co-occurring mental health vulnerabilities. Our objective is to share vital information about ASD, the START (Systemic, Therapeutic, Assessment, Resources, and Treatment) Model, and San Diego START’s efforts in working with this population. Throughout the presentation, we will showcase the systemic and strength-based approaches utilized by San Diego START’s clinical teams. Additionally, we will highlight START's guiding principles and the therapeutic models employed by San Diego START’s Clinical Team to enhance the effectiveness of care systems for individuals navigating both IDD – including ASD -- and co-occurring complex mental health vulnerabilities.

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1.  Attendees will acquire knowledge about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), including its diagnostic criteria and common biopsychosocial factors to consider when working with this population. This objective will provide insights into the complexities of ASD, promoting a holistic understanding of the condition and its intersection with mental health vulnerabilities.
  2.  Comprehend the START Model and Its Application: Attendees will delve into the START Model's principles and methodologies, and understand how San Diego START leverages it to support individuals and systems navigating both IDD -- including ASD -- and co-occurring mental health challenges.
