Using Psychodynamic and CBT Models in Psychotherapy to Negotiate Client and Clinician’s Subjective, Interpersonal and Social Realities.

Description:

The presentation will focus on bridging Psychodynamic and CBT in clinical practice. Current societal and global realities create a climate of urgency, making it challenging to stay in the clinical moment. Continual relational self-reflection, an understanding of the “serve & return” interpersonal patterns of our clients, and relevant CBT techniques in psychodynamic practice will be discussed, with clinical illustrations provided.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this workshop, participants will:

1. Gain a beginning understanding of a psychodynamic, relational therapeutic model grounded in attachment theory and neurobiological research on trauma.
2. Understand how the therapeutic relationship is a form of exposure therapy that informs the back-and-forth cuing in schematic response patterns.
3. Understand how CBT can augment relational clinical work by focusing on schemas and managing emotional dysregulation.

Presenter Information:

Terry B. Northcut, Professor and Director of the Doctoral Program in the Social Work Department at Loyola University Chicago, and the Lucien and Carol Welch Matusak Professor, teaches in the MSW and Ph.D. programs on social work pedagogy, religion and spirituality in clinical social work, and bridging psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral therapy. She received her MSW from the University of Tennessee and her Ph.D. from Smith College School for Social Work. Dr. Northcut has also taught at the University of Tennessee, the University of Southern California, Smith College, and Gondar University in Ethiopia. She has published extensively in teaching, religion, and spirituality, integrating psychodynamic and CBT, and social work in Ethiopia. Dr. Northcut continues to practice, supervise, and consult as a licensed clinical social worker in Chicago.
