Description:

In this presentation, we will review the diagnostic criteria for gender dysphoria (DSM-5-TR) and gender incongruence (ICD-11) in children and adolescents/adults, including a review of differential diagnoses and prognostic factors in DSM-5-TR. We will then consider language, culturally competent practice, and gender-affirming care for individuals with gender dysphoria and people who identify as transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) clients. The presenter will emphasize the need to differentiate between clients with gender dysphoria and individuals who identify as TGD and review the prevalence of gender dysphoria and TGD identity in the U.S. population. To effectively consider aspects of what is now named gender dysphoria across the life course, we will examine the history of the nomenclature and diagnostic issues since the diagnoses of gender identity of childhood and transsexualism were first introduced into DSM-III in 1980. Importantly, we will look at the association between gender dysphoria and self-harm, suicidality, and mental illness for adolescents and adults separately. Finally, we will review the 2022 Standards of Care of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health for children, adolescents, and adults by age category.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Identity the differences and similarities between diagnoses of gender dysphoria (DSM-5-TR) and gender incongruence (ICD-11).
Identify differential diagnoses and prognostic factors of gender dysphoria highlighted in the DSM-5-TR.
Increase awareness of language, culturally competent care, and principles of gender-affirming care, including differences by age groups and gender dysphoria diagnosis versus transgender and gender-diverse identity.
Increase knowledge of the history of the diagnosis of gender dysphoria and its diagnostic issues since it was first introduced into the DSM-III in 1980.
Increase awareness of the disproportionate risks of self-harm, suicidality, and some mental illnesses for adolescents and adults with gender dysphoria.
Increase clinicians’ ability to apply the Standards of Care of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health to clients in different age groups (children, adolescents, and adults).

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Robin M. Mathy, ASW has an MSW from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities (2003) and Master’s degrees in Sociology (Indiana University-Bloomington, 1989), International Relations (University of Cambridge, 2004), and Evidence-Based Healthcare (University of Oxford, 2004). She is registered as an associate clinical social worker in California, licensed in Oregon as a Licensed Master Social Worker, and in Minnesota as a Licensed Graduate Social Worker. She has practiced as a social worker intermittently in several states since 2003. In addition, she has spent more than a decade consulting for national and international healthcare organizations to train physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers to be evidence-based practitioners. She has published four books and over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters addressing LGBT mental health, online sexual activities, and ethical and methodological issues of Internet-mediated research and practice primarily. She is currently studying for a Doctor of Social Work degree at Capella University and works as a volunteer therapist at A Home Within in San Diego, where she works with children and adolescents in the foster care system and adults who were in the system.
