Description: The use of psychedelic medicines such as MDMA and psilocybin as catalysts to psychotherapy has been receiving a lot of press as they advance through clinical trials, which if successful, would lead to FDA approval for the use of these medicines as adjuncts to psychotherapy. These impressive results from early clinical trials demonstrated that these medications can be used safely in controlled settings. However, while the moral panic of the 1960’s regarding psychedelic medicines increasingly recedes into the background, many clinicians are only are familiar with these agents as drugs of abuse. This talk will review two candidate agents - MDMA and psilocybin, and discuss ketamine, a psychedelic antidepressant medication already in use. These agents may harness a period of increased mental flexibility and openness to learning that permits psychotherapeutic change to proceed faster than with psychotherapy alone. The limitations and risks of these treatments will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will:

Name two psychedelic medicines being researched for use as adjuncts to psychotherapy
Describe two possible mechanisms for how psychedelic medicines may accelerate the psychotherapeutic process
Name one psychedelic medicine currently available for use in psychiatry
Describe possible risks to psychedelic assisted therapies and how those risks are managed

About the Presenter(s):

Andrew Penn, the presenter, has a Master's in Nursing from UCSF with a specialty as a Psychiatric Adult Nurse Practitioner. He has been involved in the development of integrated psychopharmacology curriculum and extensive online and classroom content. He has provided guest lectures on basic psychopharmacology and workshops on clinical interviewing and case formulation to nurse practitioner graduate students. He has a certificate in psychedelic assisted therapies and research from the California Institute for Integral Studies.

Patricia Penn, PhD, LCSW will be the discussant for this presentation. She is a Bay area clinician with extensive training and experience treating a range of issues including trauma, affective disorders, to name a few.

This course meets the qualifications for 1.5 hours of continuing education credit for MFTs, LPCCs, LEPs and/or LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.

Note: With supervisor approval, registered ASWs may use CEs toward LCSW hours.

Non-members of CSCSW will be charged: $10 admission
For CEU’s there will be an additional charge of: $10 per CEU ($15 for 1.5 CEU’s; $20 for 2 CEU’s)
CSCSW Members and students will continue to attend and receive CEUs for free
