Presenter: Catherine Phillips LCSW

Description:  This talk will give an overview of the type of emotional learning that happens in an Infant Observation and how that sustained emotional presence and containment can benefit our work in the clinical setting. We will set the stage by talking about complex dynamic interchanges between the baby and their world and how these early experiences inform each of our connections to others and ourselves throughout the lifespan. We will do a practice observation and have an opportunity to reflect on some of the dimensions of our learning during this talk. The experiential learning combined with the group discussion provide a means to develop one’s own ability to sustain emotional presence and containment in the clinical setting.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to describe the utility of Infant Observation in further developing their own capacities to sustain emotional presence and containment.
  2. Participants will be able to identify at least three features of infant development they learned during the talk.
  3. Participants will have the opportunity to practice using an exercise from the Infant Observation.
