Description: Do we say one thing to clients regarding their parenting and then do something else at home with our own children? What can actual mother/clinicians tell us about their experiences of being a parent and a psychotherapist? Theory, education, training, professional experience, these are the elements that go into the making of a clinical social worker or any psychotherapist. But what about the actual voices of those about whom so much is written, the mothers themselves? This dissertation in progress gives voice to the mother/clinician, letting her describe in her own words the relationship between her professional self and her personal role as a mom, with particular interest in the concept of mother-blame in our psychotherapy culture and the larger society.
Goals:
- Why being a clinician is both a blessing and a curse when it comes to motherhood.
- How motherhood changes the psychotherapist.
- The effects of our culture of psychotherapy on the clinician/mother.
About the Presenter:
Geri Goldmann received her MSW from the USC School of Social Work in 1982 and has been a licensed practitioner in California since 1986. She has worked in both the public and private sectors, including inpatient (VA West Los Angeles, Metropolitan State Hospital,) and outpatient medical and mental health settings (Palo Alto Medical Clinic, San Mateo County Hospital, Family Service of Los Angeles). She was a doctoral student at The Sanville Institute for Clinical Social Work and Psychotherapy in Berkeley and is completing her PhD with Institute for Clinical Social Work in Chicago. Geri is in private practice in Redwood City and served for three years on the board of the California Society for Clinical Social Work.
Pre-Workshop Celebration:
We will celebrate "Social Work Month" with a special tribute to the life and professional contributions of Chet Villalba, who passed away on February 1, 2019. He had a profound impact on the social work profession and on the California Society for Clinical Social Work. He was a founder of CSCSW and served as a board member and treasurer. This will be a very special meeting.
Please join us to pay tribute to Chet's memory and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of CSCSW. Refreshments will be served. Feel free to bring possible new members/students to this gathering. Please register on the website.

The meeting room is on the third floor next to the cafe with free parking below the building. Take the Main Elevator. Meeting time is 12-2:00 PM with the first 15 minutes reserved for signing in and networking. The presentation starts at 12:15 PM following announcements.
CEU INFORMATION: 1.5 CEUs will be offered for LCSWs - members earn credits at no cost. Non-members are charged $10 admission and an additional $15 for CEUs ($25)
