The American Association for Psychoanalysis in Clinical Social Work in joint sponsorship with The Sanville Institute and the California Society for Clinical Social Work Presents: Program: Whither Analytic Identity When Aging Interferes?

Presenter: Claire Allphin, MSW, PhD

You are invited to join us for a much needed presentation on a much avoided topic. What happens to therapists when we are no longer in demand, when newer therapists become more involved in our organizations and we need to step aside and make space for them, or we are not asked to take on roles we once filled with great interest and hard work? How do we gracefully leave the stage and continue to feel we are living meaningful lives? Our work is so significant to us that it is hard for many of us to think of retiring.

We hope this presentation will stimulate you to reflect on your thoughts and feelings as Dr. Allphin discusses her own reactions to these issues. She believes this last stage in our careers and our lives can be a lonely process, given the lack of models, due to the unique experience each of us has when facing illness and death. Our choice to continue working contains the real possibility that our patients may experience the sudden loss of us, or have to deal with our illness as we continue to work in our later years. Dr. Allphin’s thoughtful and deep reflections on these themes will offer us the opportunity to think together about how we affect our patients when we continue to practice late in life. This presentation and conversation is relevant to all ages and all stages of your career. Your personal reflections and case examples will be very welcome.
