SUMMARY OF PRESENTATION: This presentation is aimed at engaging participants in raising critical consciousness, accountability, and empowerment around issues of diversity, privilege and power. It explores some of the challenges of navigating through the complexities of intersectionality with clients and its impact on clinical work. This presentation will clarify the meaning of the concepts, provide case examples, offer information about diversity, power, privilege and intersectionality and will also facilitate a dialogue on the importance of utilizing intersectionality as a tool to increase equity and improve effectiveness in practice. Participants will be provided with strategies to apply workshop content to support client empowerment, promote social justice and to embrace intersectionality in micro, mezzo and macro practice settings. This workshop is designed to assist mental health clinicians and students at all levels of experience and licensure in enhancing their abilities to increase cultural competence, humility, accountability and efficacy in their practice. The goal is to teach, inform and encourage mental health practitioners to provide appropriate clinical services to clients with varying intersectional identities. There will be ample time for discussion throughout the workshop.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Gain understanding of diversity, intersectionality, power and privilege and their impact on practice effectiveness.
- Develop skills to navigate through the complexities of intersectionality with clients, paying special attention to our own biases and blind spots.
- Learn and describe strategies to utilize intersectionality in increasing empowerment, increasing equity and efficacy in practice.
LOCATION AND PARKING INFORMATION:
- The Galleria is located at the intersection of 101 and 405 freeways and the corner of Ventura and Sepulveda.
- Easiest Entrance: The easiest entrance is at the southern end of the mall - take Sepulveda Blvd and turn at stoplight into ‘Galleria Lane’ (near Ventura Blvd). Follow signs to Valet, just past valet will be area for Self-Parking.
- The Community Room is located on the 1st floor near the Cheesecake Factory and past the Paul Mitchell Salon and ATM.
- Validation for all day parking provided to the first 50 attendees (per the Galleria), so please arrive early.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER:
Wendy Ashley, Psy.D., LCSW is an Associate Professor and the Associate Chair of the California State University at Northridge’s Masters of Social Work program. Dr. Ashley received her doctorate in Clinical Psychology (Psy.D.) from Ryokan College and her MSW from the University of Southern California. She has been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker since 1998 and has over twenty years of social work experience in the areas of community mental health, child welfare and addiction recovery. Dr. Ashley is the author of multiple publications, speaks at conferences nationwide and internationally, maintains a private practice and provides training for multiple community agencies. Research interests include treatment models for working with African American and Transgender clients, effective trauma interventions, creative engagement of involuntary clients, the impact of power and privilege on macro and micro practice, and child welfare. She is passionate about promoting social justice, and infuses an intersectionality lens in her teaching, practice and research.
