Presenter: Lani Stoner, LMFT

Description: The goal of the training on Basic Symptom Management, is to provide therapists with a set of tools to utilize with clients who have disruptive, distressing or persisting symptoms, impulses or behaviors. This knowledge will help clinicians inform clients that they have a choice of their responses to symptoms and impulses or can change behaviors. These tools can decrease the intensity, frequency and duration of symptoms and help clients learn ways to decrease problematic behaviors or their responses to impulses.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn tools for basic symptom management with clients. 
  2. Utilize intervention strategies to identify client triggers and help the client respond to exacerbation of symptoms with less distress, decreased episodes and decreased duration of symptoms. 
  3. Differentiate possible causes of treatment resistance from the need for a referral to a medical professional for evaluation and treatment.

Bio: Lani Stoner, LMFT, has worked in the mental health field since 1976 after completing her MA in Counseling Psychology. She received her license in 1993 and has been in private practice from 2006 to the present. Lani has worked extensively with people struggling with disruptive and distressing symptoms. Currently, she is focusing on the use of telephonic and online therapy with clients, especially in her volunteer work with The Soldiers Project.
