Trauma And Attachment: Implications For Therapy
Presented by: Anne C. Groves, LCSW,
Saturday, September 27, 2008
Therapists working with trauma face unique and complex challenges. Sometimes the therapy itself can be traumatic, for the therapist as well as the client, leading to chaotic reenactments, therapeutic impasses, and complicated transference/countertransference entanglements.
Contemporary research on attachment can shed light on many of these difficulties. Attachment failures or disruptions with primary caretakers frequently form the core of the traumatic experience itself, particularly for clients suffering from complex trauma originating in childhood. Often these attachment failures are unwittingly repeated in the therapeutic relationship, leading to repetitive, unproductive, and retraumatizing impasses.
Handling these impasses effectively can both facilitate the ongoing therapeutic process and shed light on hidden facets of the original trauma. Through lecture, discussion and case examples, this workshop will explore techniques for recognizing and resolving traumatic attachment disruptions within the therapeutic relationship, thereby creating a secure space within which the original trauma can be healed.
