Law & Ethics For The Advanced Clinician

This six-hour workshop will provide the advanced clinician with an update on laws, regulations and ethical standards affecting the practice of psychotherapy in California. By the end of this workshop attendees will be able to: Identify ethical dilemmas and utilize the Six Essential Steps for Ethical Problem Solving Model for resolving ethical dilemmas; understand the updates for mandated reporting of child abuse/ neglect, elder and dependent adult abuse reporting and domestic violence screening; understand the legal concepts of confidentiality, privileged communication and informed consent and how these concepts impact their practice as mental health professionals; understand the new Post Tarasoff Reporting Requirements required by the Ewing V. Goldstein and Ewing V. Northridge Medical Center Court Decisions; and understand legal and professional record keeping and record retention requirements. Additional topics will include licensing board actions, malpractice litigation, referrals and creating a Professional Will.

The instructor, Carole Bender, J.D., LCSW, is currently Director of the UCLA Department of Social Welfare Center on Child Welfare. She has presented legal and ethical training to mental health clinicians, school social workers and public child welfare workers in hospital and agency settings as well as at national and state conferences. Ms. Bender is Chair of the CSCSW Ethics committee and past-president of the Board of Directors.

Continuing Education Credits: This course meets the qualifications for 6 hours of CE credit in the subject of Law and Ethics for LCSWs and MFTs as required by the California BBS. PCE #1.
