Topic: Emotional Abuse and Coercive Control in Interpersonal Relationships
Presenter: Mimi Lind, LCSW
Although physical and sexual abuse in a relationship plagued by intimate partner violence is common, we all know that much more common and damaging is the emotional abuse. One aspect of IPV, or domestic violence as it is often called, which hasn’t been named in the mainstream media or clinical writing is the concept of “coercive control.” This presentation will focus on this aspect of emotional abuse and will help the clinician better understand the person who feels she can’t leave. This type of abuse uses “gaslighting” and threats in subtle ways.
Mimi Lind is Director of Mental Health Services at Venice Family Clinic and a faculty member at Loyola Marymount University and a clinical instructor at Smith College School of Social Work. This will be an important presentation for all to hear regardless of practice setting as this kind of abuse is so pervasive.
